The History of Cowan Churches: Part 2

Jarod Pearson will provide a Part 2 lecture on “The History of Cowan Churches” at Cowan Center for the Arts on Sunday, February 27th, at 4:00 p.m.

The first lecture in January focused on the revival movements of the early 19th Century and on Cowan churches that no longer exist. The upcoming Part 2 lecture will explain the complex history behind the churches that exist in Cowan today. Among the topics will be the predecessor to Cowan Church of Christ, the predecessor to St. Agnes’ Church, the Union Movement that resulted in two Presbyterian congregations, and the extraordinary development of a federated Methodist-Presbyterian church.

Some strange and interesting facts will be covered, such as two church buildings that came from other cities, a cross made from a moonshine still, a church that became a theatre, and a theatre that became a church.

The “History of Cowan Churches” is part of the ongoing lecture series at Cowan Center for the Arts.
