Storytelling: David Campbell Kelley, the “Fighting Preacher”

Dr. Michael Bradley will discuss David Campbell Kelley, a prominent Methodist minister who was a Colonel under Bedford Forrest. Dr. Bradley will draw from his book Forrest’s Fighting Preacher: David Campbell Kelley of Tennessee.

Prior to the Civil War David C. Kelley was a Methodist minister and a missionary to China. During the war he was a combat officer who commanded the regiment once under Nathan Bedford Forrest. Kelley was a friend of Forrest and stayed in touch with him after the war. In 1870 David Kelley was one of the founders of Vanderbilt and pastor of several churches, including McKendree Church in Nashville. He was always a colorful and controversial character, truly a “fighting preacher.”

Dr. Bradley’s “David Campbell Kelley” lecture is part of the ongoing lecture series at Cowan Center for the Arts.
