Free Sewanee Summer Music Festival Concert in Honor of Miss Elizabeth Haynes

On Thursday July 12 at 7:00 p.m., the Sewanee Summer Music Festival will be performing a number of pieces to honor the memory of Miss Elizabeth Haynes as a part of its musical community outreach program. The festival students will showcase a number of chamber pieces and entertain local audiences. Admission is free.

Miss Elizabeth Haynes, a lifelong Decherd resident, was known to many as “Franklin County’s First Lady of Music” and as a benefactor to the Sewanee Summer Music Festival. She attended Ward Belmont College and Vanderbilt University before moving to New York City to study at the Julliard music conservatory. Returning home, Miss Elizabeth taught music to hundreds of Franklin County students over a span of four decades. After retiring from music instruction in 1991, Miss Elizabeth came to St. Agnes’ and played the organ for almost a decade.

Sewanee Summer Music Festival – Other Concerts

The SSMF will also present a number of other concerts in Week 3. The guest artist performance by Sō Percussion’s will be on July 11 at 7:30 p.m. They will conduct master classes, work with chamber ensembles, and share their wealth of knowledge and experiences with our students to show them what it really takes to be a professional musician in the 21rst century. On July 14th, students will perform a chamber music concert at 4 p.m. and the Faculty Artist Series concert titled, “Between the Wars” featuring a special presentation of Dumbarton Oaks conducted by Courtney Lewis at 7:30 p.m.. On Sunday, conductors Courtney Lewis and Jason Seber will lead the two student orchestras in an afternoon of story tales and romance. Pieces include The Firebird Suite, Swan Lake, Sibelius Symphony No. 2, Suite from Henry V, and Romeo et Juliette. This symphony Sunday will be the accumulation of the students’ work of three weeks and will be one of their best concerts to date.
