Acclaimed as “a walking, talking folk-blues-roots music encyclopedia”, Andy Cohen returns to Cowan for a “pay what you want” concert featuring the music of “the Southeast quadrant, America’s great musical fountain head”. He has toured with blues greats including Brother Daniel Womack, Rev. Dan Smith, Jim Brewer, Honeyboy Edwards, and Martin, Bogan and Armstrong. Andy worked with Walt and Ethel Phelps, Big Joe Duskin, Pigmeat Jarrett, Etta Baker, Big Boy Henry, Son Thomas, and – for a brief time, the legendary Rev. Gary Davis. His concerts offer performances of the songs of these and “any of a hundred other blues people” combining these with “street corner gospel and spiritual players from a dozen different forms of Black and white worship [which] add richness and gravity to Southern music.”
With a devotion to studying, performing and promoting pre-WWII blues and folk music, Andy has been a tireless advocate not only of music but those who perform it. Over the years, he’s worked to support and promote many of his mentors as well as dozens of younger players, by organizing festivals and arranging bookings at other performance venues. He has researched and written about several of the blues masters, and works to preserve and disseminate their legacy through performances, classes, and anywhere people are making and sharing music.
Andy is also a master of a rare 1905 Dolceola, “a Schroder-sized grand piano”, on which he plays gospel, ragtime, blues, folk music and more.
Seating is limited, and reservations are recommended. No fee is required for admission, but attendees are welcome to pay what they want to help support such events at Cowan Community School. Andy will also host a guitar workshop May 24 from 5 – 7 p.m.
